Paul DeMoura 2024 Trial Pending
On April 4, 2024 around 10:00 PM Dighton Police Department received a phone call from an off-duty Taunton police officer traveling on Route 44 when he observed a man, later identified at Paul DeMoura (57) lying in the road on Winthrop Street near the Gulf gas station. The officer immediately called for assistance.
Investigators believe the man was walking alongside Route 44 westbound when he was struck by a passing vehicle, which fled the scene. He was transported to Morton Hospital, where he later died.
UPDATE: April 11, 2024
Michael Laboy (19) of Providence, R.I. has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash death resulting. Laboy was arrested in Taunton at his place of employment without incident. On April 12, 2024 Leboy plead not guilty at his arraignment and was released on $2,000 cash bail. Leboy's license is already suspended in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts
Leboy told investigators he thought he had struck a deer, later admitting that it may have been a person, but he didn’t want to think about it being person.
The vehicle Leboy was operating belonged to his girlfriend, who confirmed to investigators Laboy had been using it to get to and from work in Taunton. Using part of a headlight found at the scene and surveillance cameras in the area, Dighton Police were able to track the car to the girlfriend’s home in Providence R.I. When located, the vehicle was covered and parked in the driveway. The girlfriend confirmed that Leboy had purchased the car cover on April 5 2024. After obtaining a search warrant the vehicle cover was removed.
Investigators found it had a shattered windshield, dented hood, and blood on it.
